Timpson's Got Talent
A sensational evening was had by all at the Timpson's Got Talent contest at Sandymere last week. Not the run of the mill talent parade, but a cast of real class entertained a packed marquee.
Eight superb acts battled it out for the right to return for the Grand Final on 24th September with the fantastic prize of a trip to LAs Vegas on offer to the winner.
The format of the evening was simple. Each act was given the chance to perform and were critically assessed by the panel of judges. There was a familiar ring to the judges table, very reminiscent of the X Factor troop including the same mix of encouragement and crushing honesty from some quarters.
To be fair, their job was extremely difficult with a wide variety of acts that were expertly interviewed by compere, James (O'Leary) Timpson. The bill could be described as 'eclectic' offering solo vocalists and brilliant bands, as well as Madame Cobbla and TAs, the Fushion Belly Dancer.
The first four 'evictions' were decided by audience vote, along with two guaranteed finalists. The remaining two acts had to perform again to persuade the judges, they were worthy of the last place in Friday's final.
The disappointment of those voted off - Trevalee Sykes, Floyd Arrisol, Sam Cushnagan's 'The Wheels' and Alan Miller's group 'A Penny Change' - was in stark contrast to the joy shown by winners Mark Collier's 'Resist' and especially Madame Cobbla's attention.
Indeed, lead judge John (Cowell) Timpson suggested that Madame Cobbla was lucky to still be in the Marquee having "been rude and insulting to an Area Manager, the Managing Director and the Chairman all within the space of a few minutes!" Birthday boy Chris Charlton, was a special recipient if Madame Cobbla's attention.
The two remaining acts, Gary Oldham's singing duo, Sour Mash, and Fushion Belly Dancer, Tasmin Bex were asked to perform again, much to the delight of the male section of the audience. One of the two acts was to join Resist and Madame Cobbla in the final.
With the judges split in their voting the evening was concluded with one final unexpected twist.
Judge John belied his reputation by using his casting vote to send both Gary and Tasmin through to Friday's final.
One thing's for sure, his act will ensure another stunning evening of variety on Friday, a fitting finale to a great competition and a very supportive male audience!
